I don't recall if the game mentioned who or what Majora is.

The only thing that ever tried to explain the origins of 'Majora' was the manga.

It's readable online somewhere. and it's quite good.

For a while, I often wondered why you never saw multiple copies of your self doing the exact same things you did on previous trips (outside of technology limitations).

Then I started thinking... "What if you are not only traversing time, but dimensions as well." This would mean that you abandon the dimension you are in and start in an entirely new one. However, the ramifications of this line of thinking mean that every time you go back in time... Majora wins.

@ApaFox: The game doesn't mention who or what s/he is, but according to the manga, Majora was a demonic dragon that lived in a dimention where time stopped completely. People sought to acuire Majora's armor that was enchanted and supposedly granted wishes and s/he would devour any and all who approached him/her. That is, untill a traveler came along to deal with Majora. He carried a drum with him and played a song for Majora for 3 days and 3 nights until Majora dropped dead from the non-stop dancing. That, supposedly, is why music is so important in the game, and why the time limit is 3 days and nights.

The mask itself was carved by the warrior from Majora's armor so that Majora's power and spirit would be sealed away in the mask so s/he could finally rest.
